When Full Truckload Shipping Is the Right Choice
Full truckload is not simply the option for bigger consignments. It is the option for consignments where a single handling, a fixed schedule or a direct route is worth paying for.
Full truckload is usually explained as the option for larger consignments, which is true and not very useful — it does not tell you where the line is. The more practical framing is that FTL buys you three things: a single handling, a direct route, and a schedule you control. Whether it is the right choice depends on how much those are worth to what you are moving.
What actually separates FTL from part truckload

The handling row is the one people underweight. Every consolidation point is a chance for damage and a chance for delay. For robust palletised goods that barely matters; for anything fragile, awkwardly shaped or high-value, the number of times a consignment is touched is often a bigger risk than the number of days it spends in transit.
Five situations where FTL is the right call
1. You are filling most of a vehicle anyway
The obvious one, and worth checking rather than assuming. Part-load pricing rises with the space used, and above roughly half a vehicle it frequently overtakes the trip rate. Price both for the same consignment before defaulting to the familiar option.
2. The goods do not tolerate handling
Glass, furniture, machinery, anything with an awkward centre of gravity. Load once and unload once and the risk profile changes completely — often enough to justify a higher freight cost against a lower damage rate.
3. The delivery date is genuinely fixed
A site installation, a retail launch, a production line waiting on parts. A direct vehicle removes the hub network from the equation, which is where most variance in road freight comes from.
4. You are moving between your own locations
Warehouse transfers, outlet replenishment, consolidating stock ahead of a season. These are usually predictable in volume and timing, which is exactly the shape that suits a dedicated vehicle on a scheduled run.
5. The consignment is high-value
Fewer touchpoints and fewer intermediate locations mean a shorter chain of custody. Where the value of the load makes loss a serious event, that is worth more than the rate difference.
The reverse test is just as useful: if your consignment is a few pallets, robust, and not urgent, FTL is capacity you are paying for and not using. Part truckload exists for exactly that.
What to get right when you book
- Accurate weight and dimensions. A vehicle sized for the wrong load either cannot take it or travels half empty.
- Loading and unloading reality at both ends. Is there a dock, a forklift, someone to receive it? Detention charges for a vehicle waiting are avoidable and irritating.
- Access constraints. Narrow approaches, height restrictions and city entry timings decide what vehicle can actually get there.
- Documentation before dispatch, not at the gate. Paperwork is a common cause of avoidable delay on road freight.
- Who is liable for what, and whether declared-value cover is worth taking for this load.
